Jules Abel Faivre

(Lyon 1867-1945 Nice)

The French painter Abel Faivre (1867-1945) trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in both Lyon and Paris, around 1890. This painting Reading Girl clearly shows the influence of Auguste Renoir, with whom Abel Faivre has been friends. Both artists of different ages often painted the same female models together - and traveled together to Essoyes in 1897 and to Amsterdam in 1898. Faivre was also known as a cartoonist for the famous newspapers 'Le Rire' and 'Le Figaro'.
