Around 1900 Toorop was at the height of his fame. He played a major role in art life in the Netherlands and participated in exhibitions throughout Western Europe. His great strength is not only in his technical ability and his constant interest in the new developments in art, but also and perhaps precisely in his ability to reflect the spirit of time in his work. In various works the influence of Impressionism, Realism, Art Nouveau and Symbolism is visible. He also painted in a divisionist style with special light and color effects.
