De Belgische schilder, etser en lithograaf Franz Charlet was een verwoed reiziger: hij maakte een studiereis naar Spanje (Madrid, Sevilla), Tanger en Marokko (1882-1883). In de zomer van 1883 reisde Charlet samen met Théo van Rysselberghe naar Haarlem, waar ze de werken van Frans Hals bestudeerden. Hij verbleef ook bij de kunstenaarskolonie in Knokke. Met James MCNeill Whistler bezocht Charlet in 1885 Volendam en het eiland Marken. Hiernaast bezocht hij Zeeland, Zwitserland, Duitsland, Italië en Algerije.

Charlet was lid van L’Essor, maar richtte uit onvrede met de koers van de vereniging met enkele collega’s in 1883 Les XX (‘Les Vingt’) op. Les XX (actief tussen 1883-1893) bestond uit jonge radicale kunstenaars die rebelleerden tegen het verouderde academisme en de heersende artistieke standaarden. Bij Les XX zouden zich onder meer de kunstenaars Auguste Rodin (in 1889), Paul Signac (in 1890) en Jan Toorop (in 1885) aansluiten. Ook stelden veel ‘invités’ tentoon bij de vereniging, zoals Cézanne, Denis, Gauguin, Monet, Redon, Renoir, Seurat en De Toulouse-Lautrec. Ook Nederlandse exposanten werden uitgenodigd: Breitner, Van Gogh, Israëls en Thorn Prikker.

The Belgian painter, etcher and lithographer Franz Charlet was an avid traveler: he made a study trip to Spain (Madrid, Seville), Tangier and Morocco (1882-1883). In the summer of 1883, Charlet traveled with Théo van Rysselberghe to Haarlem, where they studied the works of Frans Hals. He also stayed with the artists' colony in Knokke. With James MCNeill Whistler, Charlet visited Volendam and the island of Marken in 1885. He also visited Zeeland, Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Algeria. Charlet was a member of L´Essor, but in 1883 he founded Les XX ("Les Vingt") out of dissatisfaction with the course of the association with some colleagues. Les XX (active between 1883-1893) consisted of young radical artists who rebelled against outdated academism and the prevailing artistic standards. Les XX would include artists Auguste Rodin (in 1889), Paul Signac (in 1890) and Jan Toorop (in 1885). Many 'invités' also exhibited at the association, such as Cézanne, Denis, Gauguin, Monet, Redon, Renoir, Seurat and De Toulouse-Lautrec. Dutch exhibitors were also invited: Breitner, Van Gogh, Israëls and Thorn Prikker.
